Z-Rack Materials - United States
Everything you need to source materials for your Z-rack build from US suppliers. We have listed the best stores for timber, hardware, and finishing supplies to make your build as straightforward as possible.
Home Depot
Your go-to store for the bulk of your Z-rack build. Home Depot carries everything from dimensional lumber to specialty hardware, all under one roof.

- 2x6 boards for the base frame
- Appearance-grade pine for a clean finish
- Cedar boards for rot-resistant outdoor builds
Hardware
- 3/8" carriage bolts (various lengths)
- Hex nuts and lock washers
- Flat washers for load distribution
- #8 and #10 wood screws
Board Protection
- Foam pipe insulation (3/4" and 1")
- Adhesive felt pads for contact points
- Pool noodles as an alternative padding option
Finishing Supplies
- Polyurethane (water-based or oil-based)
- Sandpaper (80, 120, and 220 grit)
- Wood stain (optional, for appearance)
- Exterior wood sealer for outdoor racks
Pro Tip
Use their free wood cutting service. Bring your materials list with exact dimensions and the staff will make straight cuts at no charge. This saves significant time if you do not have a table saw or mitre saw at home.
Stock Tip
Order online for store pickup to check stock availability before you drive out. Lumber selection varies by location, so confirming stock online saves wasted trips. The app also shows aisle locations for each item.
Lowe's
A strong alternative to Home Depot with a similar product range. Lowe's often runs competitive pricing on lumber and frequently beats Home Depot on cedar pricing.
Materials Available:
- Full range of dimensional lumber (2x4, 2x6, 4x4)
- Premium cedar and redwood selections
- Complete hardware aisle with bolts, nuts, and washers
- Foam insulation, felt, and protective materials
- Stains, polyurethane, and finishing products
Why Choose Lowe's?
- Often has better cedar pricing than Home Depot
- MyLowe's rewards program earns points on every purchase
- 5% off every purchase with their store credit card
- Free wood cutting service also available
Ace Hardware
While Ace may not stock lumber in the same volume, it excels at specialty hardware. If you need marine-grade or stainless steel fasteners, Ace is often your best bet.
Best For:
- Stainless steel carriage bolts and lag screws
- Marine-grade hardware for outdoor and coastal racks
- Specialty fasteners and hard-to-find sizes
- High-quality adhesives and wood glue
- Premium sandpaper and finishing supplies
Local Advantage
Ace Hardware stores are independently owned, which means staff are often more knowledgeable and willing to help with project advice. Bring your plans and they can help you find the exact hardware you need, including suggesting alternatives if something is out of stock.
Materials Tips for US Builders
Lumber Sizing
Standard US lumber dimensions are nominal, not actual. A "2x4" actually measures 1.5" x 3.5", and a "2x6" measures 1.5" x 5.5". Our plans account for these actual dimensions, so purchase standard sizes and everything will line up.
Outdoor Racks
For racks that will live outside, use pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact (look for the "GC" stamp) on any part that touches the ground. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and a great choice for the entire frame of an outdoor rack. It also weathers to a beautiful silver-grey.
Coastal Hardware
If you live near the coast, use galvanized or stainless steel hardware throughout. Standard zinc-plated bolts will rust quickly in salt air. Stainless steel costs more upfront but will last the lifetime of the rack.
Finish Selection
For indoor racks, a water-based polyurethane gives a clean, low-odour finish. For outdoor racks, use a marine-grade polyurethane or spar urethane rated for UV and weather exposure. Apply at least 3 coats, sanding lightly between each coat with 220-grit sandpaper.
Board Protection
Always pad every point where your surfboard contacts the rack. Foam pipe insulation is cheap, effective, and available at every hardware store. Cut it to length and secure with zip ties or adhesive. Replace it when it compresses flat (usually every 6-12 months with regular use).
Shopping Strategy
For the best value, buy your lumber and bulk hardware from Home Depot or Lowe's, then pick up any specialty fasteners (stainless bolts, marine-grade hardware) from Ace Hardware. Print your materials list from the plans and check items off as you go. Most Z-rack builds require a single trip to one store if you plan ahead.
